The International Conference on Civil Service Scheme jointly organized by the Ministry of Personnel Management (MPM) and the Government Employees Pension Service (GEPS) began its first day of the two-day program on September 5, 2018 at the International Convention Center (ICC) Jeju in Jeju Island of Korea.

 

With the theme of the Conference as Challenges and Tasks of the Civil Service Pension Scheme, it is attended by domestic and international pension experts from countries including Austria, United States, Japan, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Germany).

 

Opening Ceremony was highlighted with welcoming remarks from the MPM Minister Kim Pan Suk and the GEPS Chairman & CEO Chung Nam-Joon and congratulatory remarks from the President Song Seok-eon of Jeju National University.

 

During the First Session, Professor Robert Holzmann from the New South Wales University and Professor Kwon Huck-Ju of Seoul National University provided keynote presentations covering “Public Pension Trends of the OECD Countries” and “Challenges and Tasks of Public Pension Policy”, respectively.

 

In Session Two, speakers presented pension reform experiences of their respective countries.

 

Session Three focused on discussions on challenges and tasks unique to the civil service pension scheme.

 

Day 2 of the Conference will continue next day at the GEPS and will include an overview of best practices of public personnel management systems of Korea and the GEPS business and pension services.

 

The Conference was organized to provide a forum among pension experts from the government and research institutions to cope with current pension-related challenges amidst low birth rate and aging population and to jointly explore future strategies for civil service pension scheme.
