In the coming year, Korean public officials will be issued with mobile identification cards which will gradually replace the existing plastic cards.

When asked to present an ID card during the course of executing public service, a smartphone-based ID will prove the status of a public official. It will also enable entry into and exit from government buildings without having to take out the existing plastic cards.

In addition, it will allow logging in to the government email system and access to remote work places (e.g. Smart Work Centers) without an administrative digital signature (i.e. Government Public Key Infrastructure, GPKI).

In order to avoid confusion, the mobile public official ID cards will be used in parallel with the existing plastic cards for the time being.

After verifying the safety and convenience of the mobile ID cards, the Korean government will eventually introduce the mobile ID system to the certificates of persons with disabilities in 2021 and to driver's licenses in 2022.
